ASCOS - the Arctic Summer Cloud-Ocean Study - is an international and interdisciplinary expedition that will focus on the Arctic low clouds and the interactions with the ocean and the ice, processes that are very important for the Arctic climate.

The expedition aim to cover a column from several tens of meters into the water, through the ice and ocean surface and up several kilometers in the atmosphere with instrumentation, and in particular study the interfaces between the ocean and the atmosphere, and between the lower and free atmosphere.

The expedition, which is also a part of the International Polar Year, will depart from Svalbard late July. Once on station near the pole it will moor to an ice floe and deploy instruments on the ice and on the ship for several weeks, drifting with the ice.

Logistic support for the expeditions is handled by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat. See www.ascos.se for more details.
