WP5, task 5: Changing Conditions in the Arctic Ocean: A Study of the Impact on Human Activities and an Assessment of the Adaptation and Vulnerability to such Changes.

This task contributes to studies of the impact on, adaptation to and the vulnerability of human activities to changes conditions in the Arctic Ocean and climate. The Arctic climate is changing, the sea ice is diminishing and these changes are having and will have an impact on human activities such as fisheries, shipping, offshore oil and gas production at regional, national and local levels. These changes take place in connection with other societal, economic and environmental factors.

The analyses of impacts on, adaptation to and vulnerability of human activities in the context of data on sea ice properties and SST will provide DAMOCLES with an opportunity to assess what kinds of physical data are most feasible and relevant for future research. An assessment will result in an identification of the monitoring and modelling that are most needed, which can be utilized in supporting the design of future arctic observing systems, and will thus be an important contribution to the DAMOCLES system.

During the first period, the impact of recent climate change and sea ice cover reduction on human activities, the socioeconomic consequences and of the resulting adaptation and vulnerability of communities and sectors have been documented.
