Core theme 8: High Tech Instrumentation, technology development, integration, implementation and Logistics
The objective of WP 8 is to implement an Arctic Ocean Observing System (AOOS) in order to provide data in near-real time in an operational mode. To achieve this aim a variety of different components have to be combined and novel technology has to be developed or to be transferred in to systems which will be suited to operate in the field in an automated manner.
Leaders: Eberhard Fahrbach (AWI) and Hanne Sagen (NERSC)
For this purpose it is needed to develop novel underwater acoustic communication and navigation systems (WP8.1) and acoustic tomography and thermometry (WP8.2), to integrate complex technological subsystems (WP8.3) and to coordinate the logistical requirements and to manage the available resources (WP8.4).
In months 25-42 the biggest effort will be put into a testing of the novel technologies under development and an evaluation of the systems used during the first year of DAMOCLES field operations. The implementation of the observing system will be refined and adjusted, including the components which were not advanced enough for adeployment during the first field year. The system consists of subcomponents which are already available but in some cases alternative hardware solutions or measurements strategies need to be employed and carefully evaluated. In order to optimize the system, aplanning phase of the next fieldwork program is necessary, building on the experience gained from the first year field operations. Since the different components are in adifferent state of development a ramping up process is planned to build up the observing system in steps from the already available components (ITP) to the ones which need the highest development effort (gliders).
