Progress: 25%

UiB and UNIS:

A plan for the 2007 International Summer School on Sea Ice is established. There is a web site for the summer school where further information can be retrieved: http://www.seaice.info/. It will take place at UNIS in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, 2-13 July 2007. Co-funding from other sources has been obtained including a travel grant for participants from Nordic countries (including the Baltic and Northwest Russia). No DAMOCLES expenses have been incurred so far, however efforts from the organizers are estimated to 5% of the task work.

IPEV and ENSIETA:

A training workshop was held in Brest France on June 20 and 21, 2006 concerning mainly the High Technology Instrumentation that will be developed and operated for DAMOCLES field experiments. This workshop is organised by IPEV and ENSIETA with about 30 participants registered so far. Topics for the workshop are Lagrangian and Eulerian platforms, Underwater acoustics for navigation, localisation and communication (data transfer), Tomography and satellite communications (Iridium and Argos).

UPMC: A sea ice field course onboard the Russian icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn (Summer 2006)

A summer school for teachers was organised onboard the Russian Icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn during the NABOS-DAMOCLES campaign in the Arctic Ocean from August 21 until September 17, 2006. 12 teachers (K-12) from North America, Europe and Russia. were selected to participate in the summer school. Five of them who were from Germany, UK, France and Sweden were financed by DAMOCLES WP7.3. The summer school aimed at a broad understanding of the Arctic region and climate. Lectures were provided on arctic research topics such as atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, permafrost, sediments, etc.). Courses and presentations of research projects that were going on during the Dranitsyn cruise were presented in order to demonstrate scientific field work and research processes from data collection to models and results. Topics went through oceanographic moorings, autonomous instruments on ice, remote sensing (satellites)... Presentations on previous research campaigns were also provided.

OASys and FastOpt

A training workshop concerning data assimilation and numerical modelling is scheduled in Germany just following the DAMOCLES General Assembly in Bremen on December 4 and 5, 2006. This workshop is organised by OASys and FastOpt.
