Description of task
WP5, task 2 Evaluation of observations and coupled climate models during DAMOCLES
This Task contributes to DAMOCLES overarching tasks by a direct coupling of the extensive, multifaceted observation programme and the climate modelling work in the other WPs. DAMOCLES provides a unique opportunity to establish an in-depth dialogue between the observational and modelling groups, increasing not only the level of integration of the results but also the realisation of DAMOCLES objectives. By interacting directly with the modelling groups, the observational groups will not only scrutinise, evaluate and improve the model results, but will also develop and refine the observational programme and three observational workpackages – ice, atmosphere and ocean – will evolve into an organic whole.
Evaluations will be made on observational strategies and climate model performance. Sensitivities of the arctic environment will be evaluated based on a wide range of methods, and recommendations will be given on the design, based on DAMOCLES, of a future cost effective and sustainable Arctic Ocean Observation and Forecasting System.
To further these activities, dedicated workshops are planned, where the progress of the observational and modelling tasks can communicate and interact. To ascertain large attendance these workshops will be held in connection with the annual scientific meetings.
At the early stage of the programme a small amount of new data will be available and half a day would be sufficient. In the three following annual meetings, during the IPY years in 2007 and 2008 and at the end of the project a full day will be devoted to the integration of the different task and work packages.
